Tiene el rango de distinguido profesor en el Departamento de Geografía y el Departamento de Estudios Políticos en la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles. Obtiene en 2003 el Premio Vautrin Lud y es galardonado con el premio Medalla de Oro Anders Retzius de la Sociedad Sueca de Antropología y Geografía en 2009. Su libro On Hollywood: The Place The Industry (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2005), ganó en 2005 el Meridian Book Award.
